Bir yöntem olarak C. Wright Mills’in Toplumbilimsel Düşün’ünü çözümlemek

Abstract

C. Wright Mills ortaya koyduğu toplumbilimsel düşün yöntemi ile yaşadığı modern dünyayı ve zamanı anlamaya çalışmıştır. O, her bir bireyin içinde yaşadığı dönem ve toplum bağlamında hayatı doğru çözümleyebilmesinin önemine inanan bir sosyolog olarak, toplumbilimsel düşün yönteminin sistematiğini akademik dünyaya anlatmakla yetinmemiş, bu yöntemi kullanarak ortaya koyduğu sosyolojik çalışmalarla herkesin yaşadığı zaman ve mekâna dair bir farkındalık geliştirmesini sağlama gayreti içerisinde olmuştur. Bu bağlamda Mills’in toplumbilimsel düşün yöntemine içinde yaşanılan dünyayı anlamak kadar, herkes için anlaşılır kılmak sorumluluğunu yüklediği de görülmektedir. Toplumbilimsel düşün yöntemi içerik itibariyle çok boyutlu bir yapıya sahiptir: Bir taraftan Mills’in yaşadığı dönem Amerikan sosyolojisindeki yerleşik eğilimlerle hesaplaşmasını, diğer taraftan eleştirdiklerinin yerine koyduğu yeni bir çalışma biçimini kapsamaktadır. Yöntemin eleştiri boyutunda, 2. Dünya Savaşı sonrası Amerikan sosyolojisinde ana akım haline gelen Talcott Parsons’un yapısal işlevselciliği ile Paul Lazarsfeld’in deneyci/nicelci sosyoloji anlayışı vardır ve Mills pek çok açıdan sorunsallaştırdığı iki yaklaşım üzerinden toplumbilimsel düşün yönteminin ne olmadığını ortaya koymuştur. Ancak Mills, makroskobik ve moleküler tarz adını verdiği ve birbirini tamamlar bir biçimde kurguladığı iki yaklaşımla da kendi yönteminin çalışma prensiplerini detaylandırmıştır. Bu çerçevede makalemizde Mills’in toplumbilimsel düşün yöntemi, içerisinde barındırdığı mevcuda yönelik eleştiriler ve yerine önerilenler üzerinden çözümlenmeye çalışılacaktır. Amaç, Mills’in toplumbilimsel düşün yönteminin çağdaş sosyoloji literatüründe nereye konumlandığını ortaya koyabilmektir.

C. Wright Mills has been tried to understand the time and the modern world in which he lives by the sociological imagination method. He, as a sociologist who believes importance of correct analysis of life within the context of society and period in which each and every individual lives, has been tried to form an awareness on the time and place that the people lives in, with his sociological studies explaining his method on tell-ing the systematics of sociological imagination to academic environment. Within this context, it is seen that Mills overloads a responsibility to make the life understandable for everybody to sociological imagination method as well as understanding it. Sociological imagination method has a multidimensional structure by its con-text: in one sense it covers his revenge with settled tendencies in American sociology within the period in which Mills lives. On the other hand, it also covers a new studying style which he substitutes what he criticized before. In the criticism dimension of meth-od, he explained Talcott Parsons’ structural functionalism that becomes main movement in American sociology after World War II, and Paul Lazarsfeld’s empirical /quantitative sociology comprehension. So, Mills asserts what sociological imagination method is not over two approaches that he problematizes from many aspects. However, Mills detailed his method’s studying principles with both two approaches which he gives the name of macroscopic approach and molecular approach and builds in style that completes each other.In this article, Mills’ sociological imagination method will be analyzed over crit-icisms directed on existenceand substituting suggestions. The aim is to manifest where Mills’ sociological imagination method settled in contemporary sociology literature.
