Students's Views on Subjects Related to Arabs in History Textbooks in Turkey and How They Perceive Arabs

Abstract

It is thought that more extensive studies on this topic is a requirement and importan knowledge of how the common history of Turks and Arabs shaped the world of ideas of new generations. Therefore, in this study, the course book evaluation form consisting of 25 items prepared by examining the subjects in the history textbooks used in the high schooland and attitude scale towards Turkish-Arab relations consisting of 20 items was used in the 2012-2013 academic year in Turkey. These scales were applied to 6 different types of high schools located in Turkey. Findings and interpretations are thought to be important in terms of opinions of high school students in Turkey both about the Arabs in high school history textbooks and attitudes towards Arabs. In the study, it is seen that the students are in a positive attitude towards the Arab nation in general terms; According to the narrative of the history textbooks, the Turks thought that relations with the Arabs deteriorated during World War I; It is seen as a remarkable result that they believe that the Western countries have an important role in the breakdown of Turkish-Arab relations and that they emphasize political activities in history textbooks in relation to history textbooks.

Son yıllarda gelişme gösteren Türk – Arap ilişkilerinden dolayı özellikle iki topluluk arasındaki tarihteki ilişkinin tarih ders kitaplarına nasıl yansıtıldığı üzerinde durulması gereken bir konudur. Bunun yanında her iki toplumun ve yeni nesillerinin birbirini algılamasında tarih ders kitaplarının önemli bir yeri olduğu düşünülmektedir. Türk ve Arap ortak tarihinin yeni nesillerin fikir dünyasında nasıl şekillendiği bilgisinin önemi ve bu konuya dair daha geniş etütlerin yapılmasının bir gereklilik olduğu belirtilebilir. Çalışmada, Türkiye'de 2012-2013 eğitim öğretim yılında liselerde okutulan tarih ders kitaplarındaki konular incelenerek hazırlanan 25 maddeden oluşan ders kitabı değerlendirme formu ve 20 maddeden oluşan Türk-Arap ilişkilerine yönelik tutum ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Hazırlanan bu ölçekler Türkiye'deki 5 ilde, 6 farklı türdeki lisede uygulanmıştır. Elde edilen bulgular ve yorumların hem Türkiye'deki lise öğrencilerinin lise tarih ders kitaplarında yer alan Araplar ile ilgili görüşlerini hem de Araplar ile ilgili sahip oldukları tutumlarını ortaya koyma açısından önemli olduğu düşünülmektedir.
