Özet
This section focuses on the barrier properties of polymer and biopolymer nanocomposites. The use of nanotechnology in polymeric materials has the potential to make significant advances, especially in packaging and medical applications. Nanocomposites prepared with various nanofillers enhance the barrier properties of polymeric materials in different fields, thereby extending the shelf life of food packaging products. Environmental concerns have increased the popularity of biopolymer-based or biodegradable high-performance packaging types. Biopolymer-based packaging materials offer sustainable, environmentally friendly, biodegradable, biocompatible, nontoxic, and easily available alternatives. However, despite their environmental advantages, biopolymers tend to show low performance in terms of mechanical strength and water resistance. Studies have shown that incorporating various nanofillers can improve the hydrophobic behavior and provide high resistance properties to biopolymers. Additionally, with the help of these nanofillers, biopolymers can also acquire biological properties such as antibacterial and antifungal activity. This chapter presents a comprehensive evaluation of the barrier properties of polymer and biopolymer nanocomposite blends, including gas permeability (oxygen and CO?), water vapor resistance, and UV resistance. © 2026 Elsevier Ltd.
