The Journey Of Musahıp Mustafa Pasha From Beıng A Patronısed Person To Becomıng A Patron

Abstract

As the vizier, companion and son-in-law of Mehmet IV, the second longest reigning ruler of the Ottoman Empire after Suleiman the Magnificent, Musahip Mustafa Pasha, who was one of the important figures of the period, reached a position of patronage with the opportunities provided to him by his status. After completing his education in Enderun, Mustafa Agha started his palace service as Mustafa Ağa in the Treasury Room and continued his service in the Privy Chamber. Mustafa Agha, who was described as the sultan’s favourite, gained the sultan’s trust in a short time and was appointed as the second vizier. This journey from agha to pasha continued with the posts of district governor of the rikab-ı hümayun, chief soldier, chief captain and Bosphorus guard. Mustafa Pasha, whose father was a music lover and poet, added the talent of calligraphy to his family’s interest in literature and art. As this is his only surviving poem, it is more accurate to describe him as a literary enthusiast. According to biographical sources and poetry, he patronized scholars and artisans, and his generosity was praised in many eulogies. There were works dedicated and presented to the pasha in addition to the works written with his encouragement. Poems were written to congratulate his marriage to Hatice Sultan, as well as on the occasion of his eulogy. This study discusses Musahip Mustafa Pasha's circle of patrons, evaluates the works and verses dedicated to him in detail, and emphasises the elements of eulogy used for him in these texts.

Kanuni Sultan Süleyman’dan sonra Osmanlı’nın en uzun saltanat süren ikinci hükümdarı IV. Mehmet’in musahibi, veziri ve damadı olması dolayısıyla devrin önemli figürlerinden biri olan Musahip Mustafa Paşa, bulunduğu statünün kendisine sağladığı imkânlarla bir hami konumuna erişmiştir. Enderun’da eğitimini tamamladıktan sonra Hazine Odası’nda Mustafa Ağa olarak başladığı saray hizmetine Has Oda’da devam etmiş, padişah musahibi olduktan sonra onun için ikbal günleri başlamıştır. Padişah-ı makbul olarak nitelenen Mustafa Ağa, kısa sürede sultanın güvenini kazanmış ve kendisine ikinci vezirlik tevcih edilmiştir. Ağalıktan paşalığa uzanan bu yolculuk; rikab-ı hümayun kaymakamlığı, seraskerlik, kaptanıderyalık ve Boğaz muhafızlığı görevleri ile devam etmiştir. Babası da bir musikişinas ve şair olan Mustafa Paşa, aileden gelen edebiyat ve sanat merakına hattatlık meziyetini de eklemiştir. Günümüze ulaşan tek şiiri oluşu dolayısıyla onu bir edebiyat muhibbi olarak tanımlamak daha doğrudur. Biyografik kaynaklarda ve manzumelerde ilim ve sanat erbabının hamisi olarak tavsif edilmiş, özellikle cömertliği ile birçok methiyeye konu olmuştur. Paşa’nın teşviki ile yazılan eserlerin yanı sıra kendisine ithaf ve takdim edilen eserler/manzumeler olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Methi vesilesiyle pek çok kaside kaleme alınmış; banilik faaliyetleri üzerine tarihler düşürülmüş ve Hatice Sultan ile nikâhını tebrik maksadıyla şiirler yazılmıştır. Bu çalışmada, Musahip Mustafa Paşa’nın himaye muhiti ele alınacak, ona sunulan eser ve manzumeler etraflıca değerlendirilecek ve bu metinlerde kendisi için kullanılan methiye unsurları üzerinde durulacaktır.
