Sources of Nurullah Atac's Words

Abstract

Atac, who didn't take place in the pure Turkish movement at first, especially after mid-1940's became one of the biggest advocators of excessive purification. Some of the new words that Atac used in his essays drew attention of language researchers and various classification and compilation works were made on these words. On these works about Atac's words it's been seen that the reproduced by Atac information was given for some words that weren't reproduced by Atac. In this case there are some mistakes about the words used by Atac and doing a new in-depth research would be appropriate. 873 words Atac used in his essays were put together in a book named Atac'in Sozciikleri by another researcher before. On this work, the source of these 873 words were searched by scanning dictionaries that were published on the first years of language revolution and contains either old and new words. Lists showing which words Atac may have got from which dictionaries and which words he may have reproduced himself were created. It's been conduded that Nurullah Atac created 306 new words using affixation and compounding and may have got the others from the dictionaries. The words Atac derivated using old roots have been forgotten today. 39 words made of living roots are still living in standard Turkish today. It's been determined that frequently used words today like ornegin, kosul, gulduru, yapit, elestiri, gorece, gunce may have been derivated by Atac.
