Abstract

The history of the Byzantine Empire has always been interesting among the research subjects of medieval history. However, due to the difficulty of the source language, access to the sources and the difficulties of reading, examining and translating these sources, the subject remains a subject that is little studied and limited parts of it are studied. In this study, Niketas Choniates' Historia, which is important about this subject and is a work that tells the events from 1118 to the first period of the thirteenth century, with the language of its witnesses, is discussed. Although it has an extremely difficult and complex style, the fact that it is the only source of Byzantine history that has reached us from the end of the twelfth century makes this study a must-see for history researchers and especially for those who study Byzantine history. In this study, this valuable work has been tried to be examined by making evaluations and inferences both in terms of content, source value and how a Byzantine historical source should be.

Ortaçağ tarihi araştırma konuları içerisinde Bizans İmparatorluğu tarihi her zaman ilgi çekici olmuştur. Ancak hem kaynak dilinin zorluğu, hem kaynaklara ulaşım hem de bu kaynakların okuma, inceleme ve çevrilme işlemlerinin zorluğu dolayısıyla konu az çalışılan ve sınırlı kısımları çalışılan bir konu başlığı olarak kalmaktadır. Bu çalışmada söz konusu bu konu hakkında önemli olan ve 1118 yılından on üçüncü yüzyılın ilk dönemine kadarki olayları tanıklarının dili ile anlatan bir eser özelliği taşıyan Niketas Khoniates'in Historia adlı eseri ele alınmaktadır. Son derece güç ve kompleks bir üsluba sahip olsa da, on ikinci yüzyılın sonlarından elimize ulaşmış tek Bizans tarihi kaynağı olması, bu çalışmayı tarih araştırmacıları ve özellikle Bizans tarihi konusunda çalışma yapanlar için görülmesi gereken bir kaynak durumuna getirmektedir. Bu çalışmada da bu kıymetli eser, hem içerik hem kaynaklık değeri hem de bir Bizans tarihi kaynağı nasıl olmalı noktasında değerlendirme ve çıkarımlarda bulunularak incelenmeye çalışılmıştır.
