The Ego in Mahmoud Darwish’s Poetry: A Psychoanalytic Study

Abstract

Literary production has long constituted a fertile domain for scholars in search of intellectual nourishment. Literary texts, in particular, have persistently posed interpretive challenges to readers and critics, each of whom approaches them through the lens of the intellectual current or aesthetic school they adopt or favor. Only a limited number of researchers, however, have engaged with literary texts through a rigorous psychoanalytic framework. Many critics have instead begun with the poet’s biography, employing it as an interpretive tool to impose meaning upon the literary work. This study undertakes a psychoanalytic examination of Mahmoud Darwish’s poetry by delving into the depths of his texts and applying psychoanalytic theories to the unconscious dimensions embedded in his poetic language. The aim is to identify the psychological “ego” that the poet sought to communicate to the reader, employing the conceptual apparatus of psychoanalysis. The study endeavors to demonstrate that Darwish’s poetic corpus indeed contains psychological dimensions that mirror his inner self and personal world. The significance of this psycho-literary inquiry lies in its focus on the psychological ego within selected works of the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish, with particular attention to the ego’s states of consciousness and unconsciousness. This includes an exploration of the poetic self and its affective, alienated, and contemplative manifestations, as well as its interaction with both conscious and unconscious structures. The research aims to unveil the hidden Lilayers of Darwish’s psychological world. During the course of investigating the psychological ego in Darwish’s poetry, it became evident that most existing studies have prioritized sociological, national, or political interpretations of Darwish’s identity. Research addressing Darwish’s unconscious or offering a psychoanalytic reading of his texts is nearly absent, aside from brief and superficial references in a few works. Accordingly, this study centers on Darwish’s unconscious ego, seeking to define the poet through his poetry rather than through external social, political, or national forces imposed upon him. The methodological framework adopted in this research is a psycho-critical approach grounded in psychoanalytic theory and applied to the poetic output of Mahmoud Darwish. The study ultimately aims to affirm the presence of a distinct psychological dimension in Darwish’s poetry, a dimension that reflects the poet’s internal and emotional self.Edebî eserler, araştırmacılar için her zaman zengin bir alan olmuştur. Aynı zamanda edebî metinler, okurlar ve eleştirmenlere her zaman gizemli görünmüştür. Bundan dolayı eleştirmenler, ait olduğu veya tercih ettiği akım ve düşünce kuramına göre bu metinleri yorumlamışlardır. Bu çalışmada, Mahmud Derviş’in şiirleri psikanaliz teoriler çerçevesinde psikolojik bir çözümlemeye tabi tutulacak, şairin dilindeki bilinçdışı derinliklere inilecek ve şiirlerinde okuyucuya aktarmaya çalıştığı psikolojik benlik (ego) araştırılacaktır. Bu psikolojik-edebî çalışmanın önemi, Mahmud Derviş’in şiirlerinde kullandığı düşsel (imgelemsel) öğeler aracılığıyla şairin bilinçaltının çok katmanlı biçimde çözümlenmesine imkân tanımasında yatmaktadır. Ayrıca Mahmud Derviş’in şiirlerinde merkez bir tema olarak öne çıkan yabancılaşma olgusu üzerinde özellikle durulacaktır. Mahmud Derviş’in şiirlerine dair akademik çalışmaların 1990’lı yılların sonlarından itibaren arttığı gözlemlenmektedir. Ancak yapılan araştırmalar, bu şiirlerdeki psikolojik benliğe dair çalışmaların neredeyse yok denecek kadar az olduğunu göstermektedir. Mevcut çalışmaların çoğunluğunda Derviş’in benliğinin sosyolojik, millî ya da siyasî açılardan incelendiği görülmektedir. Bilinçdışı benliğini konu alan çalışmalar ise çok sınırlıdır ve kısa bir şekilde yer almaktadır. Bu makalede, Mahmud Derviş’in şiirleriyle ilgili yapılan çalışmaların boş bıraktığı psikolojik benliğine odaklanılacaktır. Ayrıca çalışmada kullanılacak yöntem, psikanaliz kuramlara dayanan psikolojik eleştiri olup, bu kuramın Mahmud Derviş’in edebî üretimine uygulanması esas alınacaktır. Araştırmanın sonuçları Mahmut Derviş'in şiirlerinde psikolojik bir boyutun olduğunu doğrulamaktadır. Psikolojik boyut şairin iç dünyası hakkında ipuçları vermektedir.
