Academicians experience many problems in their professional life. Although there are many studies focusing on these problems, less attention is focused on coping process. This study aims to develop an inclusive model explaining the coping mechanisms of academicians. For this purpose, semi structured interview questions were created by researchers. 31 academicians participated in-depth face to face interviews and transcriptions were analyzed using grounded theory model of Corbin and Strauss. Results showed that the participants’ problems emerged as excessive workload, low quality of education, sense of worthlessness and job position issues. Academicians handle these problems in different ways. Personal factors including pessimistic or optimistic point of view and social support may determine their coping styles as positive or negative. Although those who cope with problems negatively experience dissatisfaction and alienation, academicians coping positively can be satisfied with their profession. The results and the grounded model of the study are discussed in the light of literature detailed. © 2023 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
