Musicians with visual impairment from past to present and visual handicap in music education

Abstract

Individuals with visual impairment may encounter many problems in amateur and especially professional music education Educational institutions and students may have difficulty in finding solutions, and in some cases, the music education processes of individuals with visual impairment may even lead to a dead end. Problems are mostly not limited to accessibility equipment or lack of experience in music teaching approaches for the visually impaired. Even in society and unfortunately even among music educators, it can even be expressed that the visually impaired individual cannot make or teach music as well as a sighted individual, and that the time and financial resources allocated for instructing music to the blind are/were wasted. This situation may cause feelings of intimidation, anxiety and helplessness in visually impaired individuals who wish to take or currently taking music education. Based on this context, the aim of this study is to guide the visually impaired individuals who want to receive music education by compiling the visually impaired musicians from past to present. Document analysis, which is a qualitative research design, was used as a method, and printed and online resources were examined. In conclution, it was detected that many musicians with visual impairments have struggled to overcome the handicaps created by society rather than the handicap caused by lack of sight/low vision. but they rather achieved it with their music They have proven their competence and disability with their musical achievements, musicians with visual impairments have managed to make name in history and will continue to succeed with the contribution of accessibility and awareness studies in music education.

Görme yetersizliği olan bireyler, çocukluk çağından itibaren genel eğitim süreçlerinin yanı sıra, amatör ve özellikle mesleki müzik eğitimlerinde erişilebilirliğe yönelik özel araç-gereçlere ihtiyaç duymaktadır. Erişilebilirlik sorunlarının çözümünde müzik teknolojilerinin ise hızlı ve etkili bir çözüm sağlayabileceği düşünülmektedir. Müzik teknolojileri, özellikle gören bireylerle birlikte müzik eğitimi alan görme yetersizliği olan bireylere bir fırsat eşitliği sağlayabilir. Bu bağlamdan yola çıkarak, bu çalışmanın amacı müzik teknolojilerinin her yaştan görme yetersizliği olan bireylerin temel müzik eğitimine yönelik erişilebilirlik ihtiyaçlarını karşılamada kullanılabilecek teknolojileri irdelemektir. Bu araştırma, nitel bir desen olan durum çalışmasıdır. Çalışma kapsamında görme yetersizliği bulunan öğrencilerle çalışan bir gören müzik öğretmeni ve bir öğretim elemanı ve görme yetersizliği olan müzik öğretmeni ile müzik teknolojileri konusunda odak grup görüşmesi yapılmıştır. Görme yetersizliği olan bireylerin müzik eğitiminde kullanılabilecek müzik teknolojileri de araştırma kapsamında raporlanmış, erişilebilirlik ve müzik teknolojileri ilişkisi ile ilgili elde edilen veriler göz önünde bulundurularak önerilerde bulunulmuştur.
