Facing a novel problem: when children are not able to innovate

Abstract

Sometimes, especially in novel tasks children fail to combine pieces of information to solve the problem. One of the ways children solve problems is imitating adults. Sometimes they copy what the adult does without questioning its functionality. This study investigates whether they copy adults' dysfunctional demonstration via a difficult tool-making problem and whether this helps them to solve the problem.
