Nikomedia (Antik İzmit) çevresinde jeoarkeoloji çalışmaları

Abstract

Nikomedia/İzmit Körfezi Asya kıtasının Avrupayla birleştiği noktada dünyaya açılan bir kapıdır. Nikomedia Hellenistik Bithynia Krallığı'nın, Roma Bithynia-Pontus Eyaleti'nin ve Doğu Roma imparatorluğu'nun başkentliğini yapmıştır. Bu kentteki ekonomik zenginlik, körfezin sonundaki doğal korunaklı ünlü !imanıyla her zaman desteklenmiş ve bu özellikleriyle kent stratejik öneminini günümüze kadar hiç kaybetmemiştir. Bu bildiri yerbilimleri açısından daha önce bir çok bilimsel çalışmaya maruz kalmış ancak Jeoarkeolojik olarak hiç bir çalışma yapılmamış antik Nikomedia kenti ve çevresinde hatta bütün Kocaeli Bölgesinde ilk defa bu çalışmaların başlatıldığını müjdelemektedir. Hem jeolojik yapısı itibarıyle son derece dikkat çekici, hemde arkeolojik olarak dünyaca ünlü bir potansiyele sahip bu bölgedeki arkeolojik araştırmalar disiplinlerarası çalışmalara dönüştürülmüştür. Bölgede Nikomedia başta olmak üzere yerleşimierin paleocoğrafyası incelenirken, jeolojik, jeomorfojik incelemeler kapsamında sediman ve toprak yapısı, tarihsel çevre yapısı, işlenmiş ve işlenmemiş doğal kaynaklar hem lokal hemde bölgesel olarak ele alınıp bir taraftan tarihlendirilmesi yapılmaya çalışılırken diğer taraftan elde edilen jeolojik buluntular arkeolojik yerleşimve kültür varlıklarıyla ilişkilendirilmekte, böylece sonuçlar daha sağlam bilimsel temeller üzerine oturtulmaya çalışılmaktadır.

Nicomedia served at different times as the capital of the Hellenistic Kingdom of Bithynia, the Roman Province of Bithynia & Pontus and the Eastern Roman Empire. The Gulf of Nicomedia was an opening to the whole world, and the economic and strategic opportunities that the city’s naturally protected harbour provided were the main reasons for Nicomedia’s fame and status. This paper deals with the geoarchaeology of ancient Nicomedia and its environs, indeed with the whole province of Kocaeli. Although much work has been done on the area in general within the paradigm of the earth sciences, this paper is the first study to approach the archaeology of this region from the perspective of the earth sciences. The geological particularities of the region and the fame and great archaeological potential of Kocaeli have prompted the emergence of an interdisciplinary research project. Nicomedia in particular, but also other archaeological settlements, have been examined in terms of paleogeography. Rock structure, tectonic, historical and instrumental period earthquakes, historical structures, as well as raw and processed materials and resources have been examined both in a local context and in comparison to the wider area from the point of view of geology and geomorphology. In the longer term, all the geological evidence will be combined with data related to the archaeological objects and settlements in order to provide a more rounded and scientifically-grounded acount of the area.
