Understanding power and control dynamics in Turkish young adult relationships: a qualitative study

Abstract

Young adults frequently face various forms of abusive behavior, including physical, sexual, and psychological violence in their romantic relationships. Despite this, limited research exists on their understanding of power and control dynamics, particularly in the Turkish context. This study addresses this gap by exploring the perspectives and experiences of Turkish young adults regarding power and control in romantic relationships, grounded in gender and power theory. Based on semistructured interviews with 30 participants (26 women, four men) aged 18-25, two key themes emerged: awareness versus normalization of power and control; and recognizing the consequences and taking action. These findings highlight how young people recognized dynamics of power and control in their relationships, leading them to either normalize or reject such behaviors by continuing or ending the relationship.
