Because of their adaptive nature and great surface chemistry, two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, often called MXene, are versatile materials. Physical and chemical diversity has defined MXenes as a promising 2D material with many applications. MXenes are prepared by selectively etching particular atomic layers from their layered precursors, known as the MAX phase. Synthesized MXenes prepared by hydrofluoric acid etching have an accordion-like morphology, referred to as multilayer MXene or, when less than five layers, several layers MXene. In light of the remarkable advances in the MXene field, it is appropriate to examine the most relevant properties of these MXenes and highlight their potential applications. The purpose of this section is to review the most important fundamental and technological aspects, and synthesis aspects of MXenes, ranging from the structural and physicochemical properties of these compounds to their potential applications and devices, with a focus on medical applications and drug delivery. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
